Can I add height to my block wall in Chandler?

Updated October 2026

Often, yes, but only up to 7 feet in side and rear yards, which is Chandler's limit without a permit, and only if the existing wall can carry it. The footing, rebar and condition of the wall decide whether added block is safe. You will also usually need HOA approval and, for a shared wall, your neighbor's agreement.

How much height can I add?

Chandler's homeowner permit manual caps side and rear walls at 7 feet and front yard walls at 3 feet; above 7 feet you need a permit. If your back wall is 6 feet today, that usually leaves about a foot. Height is generally measured from the ground, so if your yard sits lower than your neighbor's, check which side the measurement is taken from before planning.

How do I know if my wall can take it?

Look for warning signs first: a lean, cracks that widen toward the top, stair-step cracks through mortar joints, or a wall that moves when pushed. Any of these suggests the wall should be repaired or rebuilt, not raised. If the wall is sound, the next questions are whether the cells have rebar and grout, and whether the footing is large enough. Those usually take a closer look, sometimes including opening a cap block.

Extra block, or something lighter?

Who has to agree?

Most Chandler back walls are shared with a neighbor or border HOA common area. Raising a shared wall changes both sides, so get written agreement from the neighbor first. Most HOAs treat a wall extension as an exterior change that needs architectural approval, and many specify block type, color and cap style. Chandler also requires zoning clearance for walls regardless of height.

So can I raise mine?

Likely yes if…

  • the wall is plumb and uncracked,
  • the new height stays at or under 7 feet,
  • the HOA and any neighbor sharing the wall agree.

Likely no, or not with block, if…

  • the wall leans or has widening cracks,
  • it has no reinforcement,
  • the new height would pass 7 feet.

We inspect the wall before we quote an extension. If added block is not safe, we say so and price the other options. See wall extensions.
